Iyengar yoga teachers undergo the most rigorous teacher certification process in the world.
To be certified at the most basic level, our teachers must first practice for many years in order to be accepted into a 3-year teacher training program. They then apprentice with a certified teacher and must pass a very challenging assessment.
Assessment includes demonstrated practice, pranayama, and a comprehensive written test that includes knowledge of anatomy, physiology, yoga philosophy, Sanskrit, and teaching concepts. Testing also includes evaluation of teaching proficiency by a 3-person panel of seasoned Iyengar teachers.
While other styles of yoga measure teaching proficiency in hours, in Iyengar yoga it is measured in years and decades.
