THE IYENGAR METHOD

About our teaching method

PRECISE, ALERT, DEEP, SAFE

These adjectives are often used to describe our teaching method.

We teach using a systematic, progressive, step-by-step method developed by BKS Iyengar, who popularized yoga in the West. Mr. Iyengar practiced, taught and wrote about yoga for 80 years. He worked with thousands of bodies and figured out what truly works.

Iyengar yoga unwinds the body, quiets the mind and enlivens the spirit. Correct alignment and correct actions in every asana (pose) are accessible to everyone because of our use of props (blocks, straps, blankets, chairs, etc.). This means that whether you are stiff or flexible, weak or strong, young or old, the beneficial effects of yoga can be yours.

Emphasis is placed on precision, anatomical alignment and full awareness. In Iyengar yoga, we do not jump quickly from one asana/pose to another. We hold asanas for comparatively long times and study the effects of each. When the body is placed in a correctly aligned posture and the attention is deeply engaged in the pose, the student begins to experience the mindfulness, focus, deep sense of relaxation and harmony that are Yoga.

Clear, safe instruction is given in Pranayama (regulation of the breath), which brings you into a meditative state.

Yoga philosophy is taught and linked to the physical practice.

While other styles of yoga measure teaching proficiency in hours, in Iyengar yoga it is measured in years and decades. We will guide you safely through your practice.
