ABOUT BKS IYENGAR
THIS SITE AND STUDIO ARE DEDICATED TO BKS IYENGAR.
BKS Iyengar was a legendary yoga master in both the East and West. Through his continuous practice of yoga for well over 80 years came an in-depth approach to the science, art and philosophy of yoga that is known as Iyengar yoga.
Mr. Iyengar was born in poverty on December 14, 1918, in Bellur, India, the 11th of 13 children. His study and practice of yoga helped him to overcome poverty and the deadly childhood illnesses typhoid, malaria and tuberculosis. The odds were against Iyengar reaching adulthood, yet he lived to the extraordinary age of ninety-five while becoming the greatest exponent of yoga the world has yet seen.
Mr. Iyengar's teachings impacted the world and produced dedicated teachers and yoga centers around the globe. The author of 35 books on yoga, including "Light on Yoga" (the definitive yoga text), he was named one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century by Time Magazine.
Promoting yoga as an art, science, and philosophy, Mr. Iyengar made yoga accessible to ordinary people worldwide, regardless of race, gender, age, or religion.
In addition to his teachings and writings, Mr. Iyengar created the props that are used in all styles of yoga today: mats, blocks, belts, blankets and chairs. He also designed specialized wooden props that are used in Iyengar yoga. These props allow people of all ages and all states of health to achieve correct alignment and actions in their asanas with greater ease.
BKS Iyengar has been called the greatest guru of the 20th century. A guru is someone who lights the way for others. Just as BKS Iyengar lit our way, our aim at Yoga.Guru is to empower you to become your own guru. We give you the tools that enable you to learn and grow in your personal practice.
